This subject introduces students to the principles of people management and organisational analysis across diverse business contexts. This subject equips students with foundational knowledge and practical skills to navigate professional careers in business. Students will explore graduate career pathways, develop employability competencies, and understand employer and workplace expectations.

Students will reflect on their current skillset and experience, using these as foundation for growth and development. Through industry engagement, networking activities and portfolio creation, students will build confidence in career planning and workplace readiness.

Professional Business Experience

BUSM3084

Recommended 8-10 hours of study per week

Professional Business Experience provides students with an opportunity to build career-relevant skills through a work-integrated learning experience. Students will undertake one of the following options to complete this subject – work-based internship (by approval), business project, international or domestic study tour, startup project, or volunteering experience.

Students will work with the Professional Business Experience coordinator to create an individualised learning plan, designed to provide opportunities to apply knowledge and skills gained in their program and build professional skills. Completing Professional Business Experience will enhance student job-readiness and build graduate employability.

To be eligible to enrol in this subject, students must have completed 120 credits points of their Bachelor of Business program.

Accounting in Context

ACCT 1005

Recommended 8-10 hours of study per week

This subject is designed to provide an overview of accounting information and explain a range of terms used in both accounting and business. Students will learn to interpret accounting reports and explore the impact that policy and measurement methods can have on accounting information and business decisions.

Financial Accounting Applications

ACCT 1007

Recommended 8-10 hours of study per week

This subject gives students the practical skills necessary to analyse the accounting transactions of an entity, and then be able to measure and record these transactions in a systematic manner for the preparation of simple financial statements.

Students learn key accounting concepts such as assets, liabilities, revenues and expenses used in financial reporting. Students produce, for example, profit and loss statements and balance sheets. Knowledge and skills developed in the subject are foundational to higher level financial and management accounting subjects.

Techniques in Financial Accounting

ACCT 2005

Recommended 8- 10 hours of study per week

Techniques in Financial Accounting is the third subject in the financial accounting stream and builds upon Financial Accounting Applications as part of the accredited accounting program. It introduces a company as a business structure and the accounting requirements for their formation and operations.

Students develop skills in using tools required for accurate record keeping leading to compilation of financial statements, as well as how to account for receivables and payables, the disposal of non-current assets, and preparation of cash flow statements. Successful completion of the subject will equip participants with a practical and theoretical understanding of usefulness of general purpose financial reports.

Accounting Information Systems

ACCT3001

Recommended 8-10 hours of study per week

This subject considers the design and implementation of accounting information systems as a data model for resource allocation and management of an organisation. Students are involved in a range of activities to build knowledge and skills in this growing area including identifying current trends in information management and changing regulatory requirements.

Students learn to use a range of tools for the presentation of data and conceptual models, and articulate the value of information, business intelligence, and information security.

Accounting Standards and Governance

ACCT3003

Recommended 8-10 hours of study per week

This subject builds on the first and second year accounting subjects, exploring financial reporting issues in greater depth and challenging students to question the foundations of financial reporting. Topics are on the International Financial Reporting Standards (IFRS) and the Australian Accounting Standards Board equivalents (AASB).

The subject develops graduate capabilities centred upon critical thinking skills, technical skills and professional judgement and their application for solving practical financial reporting and environmental social governance issues.

Corporate Accounting Systems

ACCT3007

Recommended 8-10 hours of study per week

This subject builds on the fundamental knowledge of accounting procedures gained in prerequisite subjects. It involves the comprehensive study of aspects of corporate accounting and reporting which are regulated by legislation, accounting standards, Australian Securities and Investment Commission and Stock Exchange requirements.

Students apply their learning to produce aspects of reporting, such as financial statements, corporate reports that include disclosure requirements. The major orientation is towards the theoretical and practical aspects of corporate reporting, whilst at the same time exploring the reasons for regulatory disclosures.

Auditing and Assurance Services

ACCT3006

Recommended 8-10 hours of study per week

The role of the auditor is significant in providing financial information about an organisation and the performance of management. Shareholders and other stakeholders require this information to make investment and other decisions. An auditor provides assurance or a conclusion about a company’s financial situation which is intended to give confidence to stakeholders.

In this subject, students examine the roles and responsibilities of the auditor, auditing principles and standards and the application of those standards, particularly in an electronic environment.

The Accountant as a Consultant

ACCT3011

Recommended 8- 10 hours of study per week

This subject provides students with a ‘hands on’ flexible and practical work integrated learning experience in the Accounting program. Students will work in groups on real world projects, simulating the professional accountant’s role when they engage with clients.

Students develop insights about the role of an accountant in the effective management of growth and expansion of the business. This is achieved through higher level consulting involving a wide range of business-related issues. This subject is designed to give students an opportunity to apply their theoretical knowledge in an integrated learning experience.

Enterprise Law

LAWS1001

Recommended 8-10 hours of study per week

This is an introductory law subject designed to introduce the fundamentals of law in a commercial context. The subject introduces students to the basic principles of law and the legal system as well as examining some of the major areas of law that impact on commercial dealings.

This subject examines the legal system, the way law is made and the main areas of law relevant to starting and running a business including contracts, negligence and consumer protection.

Law of Business Organisations

LAWS2010

Recommended 8-10 hours of study per week

This subject deals with legal issues concerning the creation and control of companies and compares this structure with other forms of business organisations, such as joint venture, partnership, trusts and sole traders.

This subject will provide students with an appreciation of partnership, and companies and a practical operation of a scheme of corporate regulation in the Australian federal system.

Taxation Law

LAWS3070

Recommended 8- 10 hours of study per week

This subject covers the constitutional basis of taxation, the process of determining income tax liability, the concept of income tax and allowable deductions, taxation of fringe benefits, taxation of certain entities (partnerships, companies and trusts), tax accounting, trading stock provisions, tax administration and practice, taxation planning and avoidance, and the Goods and Services Tax.

Corporate Finance

FINC2003

Recommended 8-10 hours of study per week

This subject introduces the fundamental concepts of finance theory and the tools of financial decision making in the context of the Australian institutional environment. These concepts relate primarily to the time value of money, risk and return, capital budgeting and capital structure.

The subject’s purpose is to develop an understanding of the basic practices of financial management from the perspective of a firm (both large and small). Students examine the investment, financing and dividend decisions of corporations.

Management Accounting Fundamentals

ACCT1010

Recommended 8-10 hours of study per week

This subject provides an introduction to management accounting in an e-commerce environment. Students examine the interrelations of management accounting to other functional areas, to suppliers, to customers, and to other sources of external information relevant to planning and control.

Through a range of activities, students learn the development and logic of routine and non-routine analysis performed to support management decision making.

Contemporary Management Accounting

ACCT2001

Recommended 8-10 hours of study per week

This subject examines the role of contemporary management accounting systems and techniques as well as the factors that influence the design of these systems. Students learn about the appropriate choices of different management accounting techniques and the importance of strategy in the contemporary business environment.

Students expand their knowledge by applying techniques through real-life scenarios, and analysing and make recommendations that take into account the constraints and opportunities each present. Through the design of performance measurement systems, students demonstrate skills in critical thinking and decision making valued in the accounting organisations.

There are many ways you can gain entry into a degree through Western Sydney University Online. We accept any one of the following, provided you meet the minimum requirements relating to that criteria:

  • Cert III, Cert IV or diploma in any field
  • Completion or partial completion of tertiary study
  • Work experience, in any industry (assessed on a case by case basis)
  • Completion of Year 12 HSC (or equivalent), with a minimum required ATAR
  • Special Tertiary Admissions Test (STAT)
  • PTE or IELTS for English proficiency may be required depending on where entry documentation was completed

Assessment requirements including examinations differ from subject to subject. In most degree programs, there will be examinations that you must sit. Exams are taken at specified metro and regional exam centre venues around Australia.

Of course. Whether you study on-campus or online, your learning outcomes and qualification are the same. Even to the point of when you graduate, you will receive the same testamur. A testamur is your graduation certificate and it does not specify your mode of study. Regardless of whether you study online or on-campus you will still be getting the same qualification from an internationally ranked university.
